About the Station The Cotton
Research Station, (CRS) Veppanthattai has been started as per the Tamil Nadu
Government G.O. Ms NO 372 Agriculture (AU) department dated 5.12.2006.
- The Cotton
Research Station, Veppanthattai is functioning from 09.05.2007 in an area of
22.16 ha (54.75 acres) donated by the public of Veppanthattai and Annamangalam
Panchayat, Perambalur district.
- The natural
vegetation of CRS farm was removed during July to September 2007, lands were
leveled and divided into five blocks viz., Eastern, Western, Northern,
Southern and Central blocks.
- The approach
road (1.31 acre, 30 m wide and 174 m long) connecting the CRS farm to Attur
Road was purchased and donated by M/S Andimuthu Chinnapillai Trust, Perambalur.
- The soils are
deep vertisol belonging to Pilamedu series (Typic
haplusterts).
- The annual
average rainfall of the Perambalur district is 908 mm.
Mandate
The main mandate of the station is developing suitable cotton
hybrids/varieties for the regions, while the long term objectives are as follows
- To increase the
productivity of cotton through breeding and release of suitable cotton
varieties with high fiber length and high strength of spin yarns of high count.
- To produce and
supply good quality hybrid cotton seeds to the farmers and impart training to
the farmers on hybrid seed production
- To develop
suitable cotton based cropping system for the region.
- To develop
International and National linkages to get external funding for the research
and infrastructure development programmes.
